A very easy 270 k drive from Cooinda to Katherine with a stop off at The Railway Hotel in Pine Creek for coffee. Someone has spent a lot of money refurbishing this place into a motel/caravan park and looked great.
So we are out of Kakadu now and it’s has been interesting to see the landscape gradually change particularly with respect to the vegetation. Throughout Kakadu there was always heaps of pandanus trees and shrubs among the long grass, plus quite densely treed areas dotted with termite mounds. There was also a lot of burning off through traditional land management practices. Never anybody around, just undergrowth smouldering. Apparently the grasses contain a certain level of moisture that just lets the grass burn slowly and prevents it getting out of control. So in a couple of the photos we tried to show both sides of the road, one before burning and one afterwards. Doesn’t make for a very attractive landscape, but avoids a lot of big bushfires.
Oh and along the way we found that our ancestors had claimed part of the land and a creek, even though they spelt the name wrong.
