Our plan is to spend another day or two in Kakadu before we cross to Katherine and then make our way up through Litchfield to Darwin. Our schedule has got a little bit out of whack because we had planned on doing quite a bit of walking but we misjudged the weather. So we are a couple of days ahead of where we thought we would be. So our next stop was about 50ks from here at a camp park called Cooinda but we had heard some varying reports so decided to drive down and check it out.
Before that however we headed back to the Mamukala wetlands to see if we could improve our bird count. Alas and alack, another hour and a half of diligent looking and walking yielded only two new sightings and we are yet to positively identify them.
So to cheer ourselves up we headed back to Ambinik for a sit down breakfast, then headed off to Cooinda.
The lady at reception obviously thought she was doing the world a favour by turning up for work so we said we would be back when she was having a better day.
We wandered around the camp area and facilities which turned out to be better than reported and although not as good as where we are, it will be fine. We also plan to do another river cruise on Friday which leaves from close by, so it will be handy to stay there.
There was a very impressive visitor centre nearby and we spent an absorbing hour looking at more stories and exhibits illustrating the history of First Australians. It is amazing to see how these peoples lived and understood their country, and then learn how quickly Balinda (white man) stuffed it up and now is spending endless hours and dollars trying to fix it up again.
After that we headed back to the sanctuary of the Jabiru library and the park.
